History of the Estate Château Lagrange

                        the story of Château Lagrange

                        An estate through the centuries

                        THE HISTORY OF CHÂTEAU LAGRANGE

Traces of the Lagrange estate can be found dating back to the dawn of humanity. In Gallo-Roman times, it was known as “La Villa Rustica”, then in the Middle Ages as “la Grangia”, which would eventually become “Lagrange"as we know it today. However, we can only trace the various owners from 1631 onwards. The 18th century corresponds to the golden age of the castle, acquired by the familyof Branne, then owner of Mouton, and who would contribute to its renown. In 1820, theTuscany Tourwas then built by Visconti, which would become the emblem of Château Lagrange. In 1855, the estate obtained the title of3rd Growth ClassifiedThis was followed by a period of improvement and modernization of the vineyard. The estate itself was expanded, reaching 280 hectares, including 120 hectares of vines. Since 1983, Château Lagrange has belonged to the Japanese groupSuntorywhich then embarked on a major investment phase to elevate Château Lagrange to an unprecedented level of excellence. Furthermore, the evolution of production methods has the advantage of reducing the estate's environmental impact. This aligns perfectly with the philosophy of respecting the property's history while showcasing the exceptional terroir that offers a unique winemaking experience.

                        An exceptional terroir

                        CHÂTEAU LAGRANGE, TYPICALLY BORDEAUX

Benefiting from an exceptional terroir in the heart of the appellationSaint-Julien,Château LagrangeThe estate boasts a 118-hectare vineyard, planted in a single block. Located at an altitude of 24 meters, the center of the estate corresponds to the highest point of the Saint-Julien appellation. Situated on two north-south facing gravelly knolls, with clay-limestone soil and sandy and sandy-gravelly colluvium, the estate offersa unique terroirfor the production of an exceptional wine. A worthy Médoc estate, Cabernet Sauvignon covers 67% of the Château Lagrange estate. Indeed, this elite grape variety, planted in deep gravelly soils as is the case here, structures the wines with depth, providing optimal aging potential. The remaining vineyard is planted with 28% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. There are also 7.5 hectares of white grapes, composed of 60% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Sauvignon Gris, and 20% Sémillon.

                        Between tradition and modernity

A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH FOR A THIRD GROWTH CLASSIFIED WINE

In order to respect the exceptional terroir that surrounds them, the leaders ofChâteau Lagrangehave chosen to opt for asustainable agricultureThe goals of tradition and perfection can thus be achieved while limiting the ecological footprint associated with winemaking. The estate has therefore opted, for example, for harvesting entirely by hand. This practice has a dual benefit: in addition to respecting tradition, it allows for the selection of the best bunches and preserves their quality all the way to the winery. Furthermore, a high planting density, combined with short pruning, leaf removal followed by thinning, and traditional tilling, ensures consistent and sustainable production. The resulting rich and concentrated grapes allow for the production of elegant wines that remain affordable.3rd Growth Classified.
