The Barbera d'Alba DOC (Denominazion d'Origine Controllata = Protected Designation of Origin) appellation is located in Piedmont, in northwestern Italy. It primarily produces red wines made from the Barbera grape variety, with the option of adding another local grape, Nebbiolo, up to a maximum of 15% of the blend. Barbera d'Alba wines are less well-known than their neighbors, Barbaresco DOCG or Barolo DOCG, but they offer wines with excellent aging potential. In their youth, the wines are light in color, intensely fruity, and have a lively acidity. With age, the balance is perfect, and the wines become sumptuous.
